The Home Gym's Philosophy
The overall philosophy for The Home Gym was developed and refined through my years of fitness and training experiences in the US Army's Special Operations Forces, as a fitness trainer, a Tai Chi student & instructor, an exercise science faculty member, an ardent student of exercise science, and learning from life's experiences--to include being a disabled veteran. This philosophy is summed up as my total belief in a holistic approach to health and fitness. To me, fitness and health entail a great deal more than just lifting weights or running laps. I firmly believe that our bodies are a system of systems; to achieve optimal health we must nurture and enhance each of them--mind, body, and spirit--and allow them the opportunity to function in their best possible state. As a result, you may hear me many times ask, “How do you feel”, but will seldom hear me ask, “How much do you weigh?”
"We are what we repeatedly do.
True health and fitness is more than just a weight. Whether it is how much you weigh or how much weight you can lift, weight is only a small piece of the overall health and fitness equation. However, this does not mean that you can just exercise at our sessions and expect drastic health and fitness benefits. Remember, it is your goal and you must live that goal everyday! As such, your goal must influence your everyday decisions on what and how much you eat and drink, how much sleep you average each night, how often you truly relax, and the number of times and the overall intensity that you exercise each week. That is why I instruct Tai Chi, balance, and flexibility classes. It is also the reason I offer American Heart Association safety and emergency preparedness courses to teach people the skills needed to react calmly and knowledgeably in an emergency as well as how to save a life with CPR and an AED.
